Buying a place for the purposes of getting away from the cold British winter needn’t cost as much as you think, and these five locations are currently the most affordable:
1. Turkey
The southern Mediterranean resort of Antalya is a popular destination for beach holidays and golf at nearby Belek. A small golf villa at Belek could be snapped up for £150,000, while a three-bedroom property in Antalya could be purchased for £100,000.
2. Cyprus
Property prices in Paphos are down 30%, and as such, you can get a townhouse for around £109,000 or a three-bedroom penthouse for £138,000. As well as the winter sun, organised activities like horse riding, art classes and rugby are a big draw for seasonal residents.
3. Barbados
The 40-acre Vuemont Lifestyle Resort is a secure residential development in the hills of St Peter, close to Speightstown and five minutes from the beach, where a one-bedroom apartment can be had for under £133,000. Three-bedroom villas at Mango Court near Holetown cost £245,000.
4. Tenerife
The Canary Islands are the most popular winter destination for British holidaymakers, but you can still get a stand-alone villa in northern Tenerife for around £218,000. An apartment at the five-star Abama Resort costs around £255,000, though villas there start from £1.2m.
5. Malta
Year-round fiestas, festivals and entertainments make Malta an increasingly popular winter destination, not to mention the history, tax breaks and the fact that English is widely spoken on the island. Prices range from £88,000 for a townhouse in need of development in Senglea to £320,000 for a seafront apartment in the Three Cities.
