On the crest of a Mexican wave

Mexico receives 22.4 million visitors each year, with popular tourist spots Cancun, Cozumel and Acapulco household names when it comes to sunshine getaways. The climate is consistently warm, reaching around 82 degrees year round, making it perfect to enjoy the miles of beaches on offer which span the Pacific, Caribbean and Mexican Gulf coastlines.

The food remains one of Mexico’s most appealing features, with a diverse range of dishes which are far from the standard chilli-con-carne many assume! It is affordable, and the service and culture are friendly and welcoming. It is possible to live on a fifth of the budget of the UK, as the cost of living remains low, despite the fact that public services are excellent, with the medical facilities in particular very well equipped. When you become a resident, which you are able to do after purchasing land, you are enabled to enter the National Health Care Plan which offers 100 per cent cover for a mere £160 a year in the country’s best hospitals.

Mexico boasts a selection of dynamic cities, with Mexico City the second largest in the world. Monteray and Guadalajara are the next best available. However, when investing, it can be more effective to stray from the well trodden path of cities and luxury tourist resorts, with the more rural areas of Mexico often equally appealing.

At the southern tip of the country is the port of Puerto Esconido, in the state of Oaxaca. Somewhat less fashionable than the Baja Peninsula further up the Pacific coastline, the area is still a popular laid back resort, mainly catering for back-packers, Mexican families and those who enjoy surfing. Lacking the crime associated with big cities close to the US border, yet still well equipped with new roads, a motorway and hospital, this area could well be one to watch.

However, should you prefer to be confident in a well known investment hotspot, Los Cabos is idea. Beginning to see huge swathes of development, it is home to Mexico’s most luxury properties, although prices are beginning to rise.

Lake Chapala is also popular, offering stunning scenery and a massive 55 mile body of water within close proximity of the international airport of Guadalajara. A three bedroom villa can be purchased with a shared pool for around £200,000.

Finally, Cancun is a clear forerunner in terms of tourist hotspots, as one of Mexico’s most international destinations. The well connected Cancun International Airport offers flights to and from London Gatwick and the East Midlands. Property prices are relatively high, but then again so are rental yields.
