The Isle of Ulva is the second largest island in the Scottish Inner Hebrides, measuring 7.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide, covering 4,583 acres.

Available to purchase for the first time in 70 years, the island is being marketed by Knight Frank at a purchase price of £4.25 million.

The sweeping landscape of the island is home to 123 species of bird, including the white-tailed sea eagle, as well as red deer. Whilst in the surrounding sea minke whales, sea otters, dolphins and porpoises can be found.

Beatrix Potter was a regular visitor to the island and she dedicated two books to the family of David Livingstone, the famous missionary and African explorer, who lived there.

The Scottish island is named from the Norse word ‘Ullfur’ which means ‘Wolf Island’, and human settlement can be traced back as far as 5,600 BC.

Ulva is situated just off the west coast of the Isle of Mull, where the town of Oban can be reached by a regular ferry service. A further ferry can then transport you to the mainland of Scotland.

An impressive grade B listed main house comes with the island, in addition to a church, a restaurant and tea room that are already let out, boathouse, and eight other properties including small cottages known as bothies, plus a sporting lodge.

Another famous son of Ulva was Major General Lachlan MacQuarrie, the last Governor of New South Wales who is widely known as the ‘Father of Australia’.

He was born there in 1810 and said of his roots: ‘I do not think that because I come from a small and desolate island my ideas are as limited in extent.

‘It is the man who is born in a city on an island who seldom gets himself and his country into true perspective with the rest of the Universe. But when a man of ideas, like myself, emerges from a mere speck in the ocean, he becomes a citizen of the world.’
