Cadiz – A Tale of Two Coasts and Continents

The historic city of Cadiz is situated in the Andalusia region on the most south-westerly tip of Spain. Just a mile from Africa it could be seen as the perfect setting between two continents , and the only place in Europe to offer both Atlantic and Mediterranean beaches.

For hundreds of years the port in Cadiz was used as the linking point for Europe, Africa and also South America, creating a heady mix of cultures as regular sea journeys linked the three continents together.

Now rediscovered by international visitors, it can be reached by transfer from various airports such as Gibraltar, Seville and Malaga, all regularly served today by low cost airlines.

Being the most southerly point of Europe, Cadiz can also boast the most sunlight hours in Spain, and is often referred to as the ‘Sunlight Coast’.

The award winning Atlantic coast beaches such as La Barrosa and Bolonia with soft white sands tend to be the preferred choice of holidaymakers, even offering the largest sand dune in Europe to be climbed as a vantage point to view the sun setting on the vast Atlantic ocean.

However, if you prefer the warmer waters of the Mediterranean, there are also venues to choose from. One of the most popular is Sotogrande, one of the most exclusive marinas in the Mediterranean.

Inland you will find beautiful mountains such as the Sierra de Grazalema range and also the largest natural park in Spain known as Doñana with its extensive pine forests. Fields of Spanish bulls can also be found, as the province of Cadiz is where bull breeding first began in Spain.

The close proximity of Cadiz to Africa – just one mile of ocean to be crossed – means that day trips can be made by ferry across the Gibraltar Strait to a whole new continent. Indeed, yachts and sailboats often race between the two continents in regattas.

Though fish dishes tend to be the norm in Cadiz, lovers of meat can enjoy a steak of ‘vaca retinta’, which is a local breed of beef that grazes on wild beaches. the beef is considered to be one of the most tender meats in Spain.

Property can be surprisingly affordable in Cadiz, where sought after apartments in the historic old town of Cádiz or near the coastline can start at just €120,000. Countryside villas can also be found from as little as €150,000 depending on location. Some apartments inland in smaller towns can even be picked up for around €50,000. Rental potential for overseas property investors is seen as very good.

For those with more to spend there are various luxury options with land to breed bulls or horses, or even vineyards for your own wine. Some coastline properties with private moorings are also available for those who may want to sail in.

A historic setting with plenty of sunshine, two coasts, and another continent next door. What more could you want?
