Bargain Ski Properties in France

With most of the UK covered in snow, many people may start to think of their very own ski properties but are put off by the weak value of the pound against the euro.

However, despite one of the best starts to the season in the Alps for a few years, it is still possible to purchase well-located ski properties in popular French ski areas for less than 150,000 euros.

The world renowned Three Valleys ski area will probably price out overseas property investors with that sort of budget, but in other French major ski areas bargains can still be had, with central town and resort apartments available within budget.

The former spa town of Saint Gervais Les Bains located between the resorts of Megève and Chamonix is a good year-round location where you can still buy a one-bedroom apartment with a balcony, shared swimming pool and tennis court for just €75,000. Alternatively, a good sized to-bedroom apartment can be found in the Haute-Savoie town for the €150,000 top budget.

Similarly, the small resort of Combloux right next door to Megève can offer one-bedroom new apartments from €120,000.

For the avid skiers who don’t want to be tied to just one ski resort, ski properties in Bourg-Saint-Maurice is well worth considering.

Bourg-Saint-Maurice is considered the gateway town to Les Arcs-Paradiski (the world’s second largest linked ski area) and the end of the line for Eurostar Ski Trains.

From here you can try off-piste skiing in Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise, hard runs in Val d’Isère or even get the public shuttle bus to Tignes.

In Bourg-Saint-Maurice a small studio flat could be purchased for under €60,000 or a larger one for €85,000. Even semi-detached village properties or two-bedroom duplex apartments start from €150,000.

Another resort in the huge Paradiski ski area is La Plagne, where one-bedroom apartments can be purchased for under €100,000 and two-bedroom for around €135,000.

There could even be the option of buying older ski properties in need of renovation much cheaper if you are prepared to do some work.

Those overseas property investors looking towards the future may wish to consider areas due to benefit from the imminent arrival of new ski lift links. A new link between the Southern Alps resorts of Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes, in 2021, should rocket the value of properties in the two areas. New studio apartments in villages near Alpe d’Huez currently start at just over €140,000.

Finally, those overseas property investors looking for more ski property for their money may wish to move away from the popular alpine region, across to the 45 smaller resorts in the French Pyrenees.

Resorts in the Pyrenees are on a much smaller scale than their Alpine counterparts but can offer much more for your money when it comes to ski properties.

The popular areas of La Mongie/Barèges, Luchon, Superbagnères, Peyragudes and Saint Lary Soulan are all within 90 minutes of Toulouse airport, and your €150,000 budget can get you a well located three-bedroom apartment with balcony, or even a four-bedroom house.

So, whether you choose the vast ski areas of the French alps, or the smaller, less crowded resorts of the Pyrenees, ski properties are still available for a budget.

If you are going to be stuck in the snow at home, better it be your French ski property home rather than your British one.
